NTSC to PAL

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF NTSC COMMONLY AVAILABLE FOR CONVERSION. NTSC 3.58 WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH AMERICA AND CANADA & NTSC 4.43 WHICH IS FOR JAPAN (ALTHOUGH JAPAN IS CHANGING TO PAL NOW). MOST CONVERTERS WILL CONVERT FROM EITHER FORMS OF NTSC BUT MOST CONVERTERS WILL OUTPUT IN ONLY NTSC 3.58 SO IF IT'S NTSC 4.43 YOU NEED OUTPUT, BEWARE.

This can be a nightmare, if you look around you will see devices which cost £22 ish so why would you pay £100 + for something that seemingly does the same job?

There are two types of converter

1.

Analogue.
This is a very simple device which will allow any PAL TV which has a stable black and white picture to show the screen in glorious colour, they only tend to work for screens up to 28" in size as they get a bit blurry on larger tv's. They are a simple fix and never should be bought for recording purposes.

So, if you just need to get a colour picture on a PAL TV when your existing picture is stable but black and white then an analogue device will help you. A good example of this use is with computer gaming and a DVD player & Camcorders.

We recomend the model below as there is a small white box out there which is notoriously unreliable. Our model has a bypass button, so if you do pass different regions down the same line ( like on a multi region DVD player) then this little box is a good buy, you won't be fiddling with wires every time there is a region change. They are reliable too.

IMPORTANT
If you have big TV, buy a better converter than this, anything over 28 inch is pushing it.

Digital
They do the real work, converting from 525 lines of NTSC to 625 lines of PAL and they physically change the refresh rate 60 hz for NTSC and 50Hz for PAL. If you wish to record the conversion you can only use a digital converter for NTSC and PAL. The processor is far more expensive for this kind of conversion because it all has to be done in realtime. Most machines under £300 also tend to have a physical screen size limit of 28" measured top right to bottom left of the screen after which the resolution becomes poorer and the picture more blocky.

Digital is required if any kind of recording is occuring & these are the areas where most people are effected.

1. Bought a digital camera in an NTSC area, come home to find it won't record in a PAL region.
2. DVD conversion.
3. If you get a rolling screen when you plug in your NTSC source to a PAL TV.
4. You have a true NTSC video recorder and you need to convert NTSC tapes to PAL*

This unit will convert the number of lines on the screen to 625 for PAL, and change the frequency from any system to 50 frames per sec , it is a true field converter, converting to PAL 50.

This is just about as simple as conversion gets, no technical know-how required. You run your audio from source to tv or recorder and put this device between the player and the tv/recorder, then plug it in! It's so easy, a child could do it.

*Please note that many people buy converters thinking that they will convert a PAL VCR with NTSC playback facility to PAL. NTSC playback is just that, you can play your NTSC tape on a suitably compatible PAL TV. A NTSC playback machine however does not produce a natural recording source, it actually ouputs something called PAL 60 and this is not ordinarily recordable. There are solutions for this, you may wish to look at this link.
